Manila is one of the world’s five dirtiest cities, but graffiti? That’s not a problem. It’s not that people don’t paint on the walls in the hyper-polluted Philippines capital, because they do. But they do it with a paint that actually eats smog out of the air. The catalytic paint, called Boysen KNOxOUT, reacts with light and water vapor to filter out nitrogen oxides. An environmental scientist interviewed in this BBC video says it can scrub out 20 percent of polluting nitrogen. Manila is deploying the paint in the form of massive murals, which are both beautiful and, because of their size, effective. Eleven square feet of paint-covered surface can absorb as much pollution as a full-grown tree, and these murals are close to 11 THOUSAND square feet. If we could get this stuff into the hands of street artists and taggers, it would be like having an army of energetic teenagers planting trees all over the city all day, every day. I like the sentiment of this post in regards to the idea of bakla and lakbay as different personal journeys. That is something I really take to heart in terms of who I have become as a queer man, and how I have come to participate in the relationship i share with my boyfriend.
That being said, I just cannot bring myself to identify with the term bakla, nor any of the other terms that mean gay in Tagalog. Because at their heart, they circle back to the idea of the effeminate gay man, which I see as all too easily essentializing a gender binary. I have only just begun to explore my identity as a queer man within the last year, but I already know it extends so far beyond what the binary has to offer. I don’t mean to parry the idea of effeminate-ness. I definitely want to be more feminine sometimes.
But I’m not just gay either. My attraction to women is never going to go away. (WOMEN ARE FUCKING HOT. HAVE YOU SEEN THEM?!…Sorry, I digress…) It’s only within the past year that I’ve been opening myself up to really being attracted to men, and letting that attraction be as out in the open and expressive as my attraction to women. Yet, one thing has always remained constant: my attraction to someone will always be heavily based on my face-to-face interactions with them. Thus, I am also opening myself up to being attracted to those who don’t fit inside the binary (more on that as it develops). I AM ATTRACTED TO PEOPLE. AWESOME PEOPLE. also a lot of the people I find myself attracted to these days have animal tendencies. So there’s that too. No beastiality for me though.
AAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY. What I’m trying to say with all this babbling is that my queer identity is dynamic. And I need a term in Tagalog (or any of the Filipino dialects, really) that more readily reflects that. So, if anyone knows of any, COME AT ME BRO.
